A Daily Reminder, Rendered in Wood

The Mool Mantar opens the Guru Granth Sahib. For most Sikh households it is the first passage learned and the one most often returned to — which is exactly why it deserves better than a mass-produced print.

This piece presents the verse in 3D laser cut letters on a round wooden plaque. Each character is cut as a separate piece and mounted proud of the backing board, so the lettering carries real physical depth. In changing daylight the letters throw a soft shadow that flat printing and surface engraving cannot reproduce.

Every piece is cut, finished and assembled by hand in our workshop in Brampton, Ontario.

Why 3D Cut Letters Instead of Engraving

Most Mool Mantar wall art sold online is printed onto a panel or engraved into the surface. Printed lettering fades and chips within a few years. Surface engraving lasts longer but stays flat.

Here, every character is cut out individually and raised off the background. The verse reads clearly from across a room and holds its definition permanently, because the letters are physical objects rather than a layer applied to a surface.

We also make a flat engraved version at a lower price point if that suits your space and budget better.

What It’s Made From — and Why

Both the round backing board and the 3D letters are cut from 1/2 inch plywood.

We use plywood here deliberately rather than as a cost saving. A solid wood panel at this diameter would be prone to cupping and seasonal cracking — wood moves across its grain as humidity changes through a Canadian winter, and a wide round panel has nowhere to hide that movement. Plywood is built from real wood layers cross-laminated at right angles, which holds the panel flat and stable for years on an interior wall.

It is also worth being clear about what plywood is not. Plywood is genuine wood in layers. MDF is wood fibre and glue compressed into a board — it swells when damp, will not hold a screw reliably over time, and cannot be sanded or refinished. A great deal of the religious wall decor sold on large marketplaces is MDF. This is not.

Seven Background Colours, Two Letter Colours

Choose your background from Natural Wood, White, Black, Chestnut, Cedar, Grey, or Navy, then choose your lettering in Black or White.

Mounting

A sawtooth hanger is already fitted to the back of every piece. There is nothing to assemble and no hardware to source — put a single nail or screw in the wall, hang it, and level it by eye. The plaque sits close to the wall with no visible fixings.

For the 20 and 22 inch sizes, use a wall anchor if you are not fixing into a stud.

This piece is regularly ordered for Gurpurab, weddings, housewarmings, and Vaisakhi. It suits those occasions because it is not decorative in a disposable way — it goes on a wall and stays there.
